Efficient Medium Access Control with IEEE 802.11 for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

چکیده
The IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol has inherent weakness of channel wastage while operating a Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET). In this paper, we therefore propose several new mechanisms we collectively name as Exhaustive MAC, to alleviate this problem and thus improve performance of IEEE 802.11 in MANETs. The basic principle of our proposals is to ensure utilization of channel capacity that is otherwise wasted. In addition to the concept of extra frame transmission during the wasted reservation period, our main contributions in this paper include (i) idea of RTS Release (RTSR), (ii) channel rescue and reuse, (iii) moving the state of the channel forward through ahead-of-time decrement of back-off timer. In addition, our proposed mechanisms are free from compatibility problems with standard IEEE 802.11. keywords: QoS, Wireless Networks, Mobile Computing, IEEE 802.11, Medium Access Control,

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks
Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملInfrastructure-Based MAC in Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
The IEEE 802.11 standard is the most popular Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for wireless local area networks. However, in an ad-hoc environment, the Point Coordination Function (PCF), defined in the standard, cannot be readily used. This is due to the fact that there is no central authority to act as a Point Coordinator (PC). Peer-to-peer ad-hoc mode in the IEEE 802.11 standard only imple...
متن کاملMedium Access Control Mechanisms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Medium access control protocol plays an important role in providing fair and efficient allocation of limited bandwidth in wireless LANs. The basic medium access model in the IEEE 802.11 standard, known as DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), is widely used in wireless LANs. Research efforts in wireless multihop networks, where wireless nodes need to forward packets on other’s behalf, try to...
متن کاملRevealing the problems with 802.11 medium access control protocol in multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks
The IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol is a standard for wireless LANs, it is also widely used in almost all test beds and simulations for the research in wireless mobile multi-hop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multi-hop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc networ...
متن کاملWLAN Technologies for Mobile ad hoc Networks
The paper focuses on two emerging technologies for constructing a Mobile ad hoc network: IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth. The IEEE 802.11 standard is a good platform to implement a single-hop ad hoc network because of its extreme simplicity. Furthermore, multi-hop networks covering areas of several square kilometers could be built by exploiting the IEEE 802.11 technology. On smaller scales, technolog...
